Akon Refuses to Pay a Dime in Divorce After 29-Year Marriage

After nearly three decades of marriage, the singer officially responded to Tomeka’s divorce petition and checked the box that says “no” to spousal support. Even though Tomeka said she didn’t want money, it’s unclear if the couple has worked out a private financial agreement outside of court.

The couple shares a 17-year-old daughter, Journey. Akon is requesting joint physical custody, while Tomeka is seeking full physical custody and joint legal custody.

The timing is also raising eyebrows. Just last week, Akon was arrested in Georgia for skipping court over a suspended license charge. Now he’s back in court, this time trying to separate himself from a nearly 30-year relationship with no financial strings attached.

Tomeka cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split. Akon, who is known for advocating polygamy and having a nontraditional view of marriage, has not spoken publicly about the divorce
