‘No car, no house,’ Papa Ajasco speaks on financial struggles

Veteran Nigerian actor, Abiodun Ayoyinka, popularly known for playing the lead role in the sitcom Papa Ajasco, has spoken about the financial difficulties he has faced in recent years, revealing that he does not own a car or a house.

Ayoyinka made the disclosure during an interview with Lucky Udu, where he explained that life has remained challenging despite the fame he gained from the role.

According to him, part of the difficulty stems from the legal ownership of the “Papa Ajasco” character by the production company behind the show.

Ayoyinka said the character has been trademarked and registered, which prevents him from freely using the persona for personal projects, endorsements, advertisements, or other commercial engagements.

“That particular character has been registered,” he said. “Anybody that wants to use me outside usually wants the full character with everything that comes with it, but it has never been easy for me.”

He explained that the restriction has affected his ability to secure opportunities linked to the character that made him popular.

“That’s why you don’t see me on adverts or billboards,” Ayoyinka said. “I don’t have the right to use the name unless I go and take permission.”

The actor said the limitation has reduced his earning opportunities over the years.

Ayoyinka also revealed that he retired about five years ago from his civil service job with the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, a development he said has further affected his finances.

“Things have never been okay,” he said. “No car in my home, no house of my own. I don’t even have a car.”
